DOGS AND HYDRATION ON THE ROAD

Everything you need to know about hydration, so every adventure ends with happy paws and a smile.

"Water is both fuel and coolant for a dog. Without it, even a short walk can turn into a dangerous health struggle."

Biology of Dog Cooling

While humans sweat through their entire skin surface, dogs only have sweat glands on their paws. This is completely insufficient for cooling a large organism. The primary temperature regulation mechanism occurs through mucous membranes and the tongue. Rapid breathing leads to water evaporation, which removes heat from the blood.

Once a dog lacks access to water, its blood thickens, mucous membranes dry out, and thermoregulation collapses. This leads to heat stroke, which can have fatal consequences in an incredibly short amount of time.

Do you know how much a dog should drink?

As a general rule, a dog should drink approximately 40–60 ml of water per 1 kg of body weight per day. However, during exercise, running, or in hot weather, this need increases up to threefold.

  • Small dog (5 kg): approx. 0.3 l / day
  • Medium dog (15 kg): approx. 0.9 l / day
  • Large dog (35 kg): approx. 2.1 l / day

Why not rely on natural sources?

Many owners believe a dog "will find something in the woods." However, drinking from puddles, ponds, or slow-moving streams is a health hazard:

☣️

Bacteria

Leptospirosis in puddles can cause kidney and liver failure.

🦠

Parasites

Protozoa like Giardia cause severe diarrhea and dehydration.

🧪

Chemicals

Fertilizers and pesticides from fields often wash into nearby water sources.

🌿

Blue-green Algae

Toxins produced by algae in summer are highly poisonous to dogs.

5 Tips on how to properly hydrate your dog on the go

  1. Offer water before the dog is thirsty: Dogs often forget to drink during intense play or when tracking scents. Stop every 20 minutes and offer a few sips.
  2. Don't use ice-cold water: Even in heat, ice-cold water can cause stomach cramps or thermal shock. Lukewarm or slightly cool water is ideal.
  3. Drink with them: When they see you drinking, they often want to drink too. With the Reedog bottle, you can dispense water directly into the integrated bowl without stopping.
  4. Return unused water: Reedog bottles feature a unique system where, by pressing the button, unused water can be sucked back into the reservoir. This saves water in areas where you can't refill.
  5. Watch out for hot asphalt: If a dog's paws are burning, their need for hydration and cooling increases by 100%. In such cases, find shade immediately.
